Fatigue often has a root cause. Explore the role of iron in oxygenating your blood and fueling the energy you need for your God-given calling.
The Breath of Life
Iron is the vital component of hemoglobin, the protein in your red blood cells responsible for carrying oxygen from your lungs to every cell in your body. When we are low in iron, we are essentially low in oxygen, leading to the fatigue, brain fog, and cold extremities that many mistake for 'just getting older.' God designed our bodies to require this specific mineral to sustain the energy needed to fulfill our purpose.
Functional Assessment
In functional medicine, we don't just look at hemoglobin; we look at ferritin, the body’s stored iron. A low ferritin level can cause significant symptoms even before full-blown anemia appears. Iron deficiency is rarely just about dietary intake; it is often about absorption. Low stomach acid, inflammation, or gut imbalances can prevent you from properly utilizing the iron in your food. It is a reminder that we must care for our internal environment to ensure we can benefit from the resources we consume.
Synergistic Nutrition
To support iron status, focus on heme iron (from grass-fed red meat and organ meats) or non-heme iron (from lentils and spinach). Crucially, pair these with vitamin C to significantly increase absorption. Avoid drinking coffee or tea with your meals, as the tannins can inhibit iron uptake. By being strategic with our nutrition, we maximize the energy available to us, ensuring we have the vitality to serve with joy.
Reflective Takeaway: Check your energy patterns this week; if you feel depleted, pray for wisdom to discern if your body needs nutritional support to better sustain your daily calling.
