A lectio divina framework for lingering in a single passage — reading, reflecting, responding, and resting in the Word.
Companion for the Journey
Scripture was not given to be skimmed. It was given to be savored — read slowly, reflected on deeply, and allowed to dwell richly within us. This Scripture Meditation Worksheet follows the ancient rhythm of lectio divina — sacred reading — to help you linger in a single passage until it begins to live in you.
The Scriptural Foundation
"Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path." — Psalm 119:105
"Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly." — Colossians 3:16
How to Use This Companion
Choose a single passage of Scripture — a few verses, not a whole chapter. Print this worksheet, open your Bible, and move through the four movements below. Do not rush. This practice is measured not in minutes but in depth.
The Four Movements of Sacred Reading
I. Lectio — Read
Read the passage slowly, aloud if possible. Read it a second time. Read it a third time. Listen for a word or phrase that shimmers — something that catches your heart.
The passage I am meditating on:
The word or phrase that stood out:
II. Meditatio — Reflect
Sit with the word or phrase that caught you. Turn it over. What is God saying to you through it? What memory, situation, or longing does it touch?
What I hear God saying:
What this stirs in me:
III. Oratio — Respond
Now respond to God. This is a conversation. Offer your honest heart — your questions, your fears, your gratitude, your surrender.
My prayer in response:
IV. Contemplatio — Rest
Finally, rest. You do not need to do anything more. Simply be present with God. Let the silence hold you.
Spend two minutes in silence. When you are ready, write one sentence that captures what you received:
A Word for the Practice
Lectio divina is not Bible study — it is not about analysis or interpretation. It is about encounter. You are not trying to understand the passage; you are letting the passage understand you. The goal is not information but transformation.
Print this worksheet and use it with a single passage each week. Over time, you will find that certain passages become companions for whole seasons of your life — returning to you in moments you least expect.
A Prayer for the Journey
Lord, thank You for Your Word — living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword. As I meditate, quiet my mind and open my heart. Let Your Word dwell in me richly, shaping my thoughts, my desires, and my steps. Amen.
