A guided evening reflection practice to close the day with gratitude, honesty, and peace — tracing God's presence through the hours.
Companion for the Journey
The day is ending. The light grows soft. This is the hour to pause — to look back over the hours just lived and find where God was present, even in the moments you missed Him. This Evening Examen Reflection is an ancient practice, renewed for your bedside table.
The Scriptural Foundation
"In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety." — Psalm 4:8
"Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves." — 2 Corinthians 13:5
How to Use This Companion
Print this page and keep it by your bed with a pen and a candle. In the last hour of the day, sit quietly and walk through the five movements of the Examen. Take as long as you need. This is not about guilt — it is about awareness and grace.
The Evening Examen
I. Become Still
Light a candle. Breathe deeply. Let the day's noise settle.
Pause for one minute. Breathe in: "You are here." Breathe out: "I am yours."
II. Give Thanks
Begin with gratitude. What was the first gift of today?
The first gift I noticed today was:
Three more gifts I received:
III. Review the Day
Walk through the day in your imagination, from waking to this moment. Notice where you felt peace, joy, or closeness to God. Notice where you felt tension, distraction, or distance.
A moment I felt God's presence:
A moment I felt far from Him:
IV. Repent and Release
Where did you fall short? Name it gently, without condemnation, and receive His grace.
Lord, I bring to You:
I rest in the truth of 1 John 1:9 — "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."
V. Look to Tomorrow
Entrust tomorrow to God before it arrives.
Father, for tomorrow I ask:
Guide me, guard me, and let Your love go before me. Amen.
A Word for the Practice
The Evening Examen is not about reliving mistakes. It is about becoming aware of God's presence throughout your day — the moments you noticed and the ones you missed. Over time, this practice trains the heart to notice Him more, even in the busy hours.
Print this page and keep it bedside. Let the candle and the quiet become a signal to your soul that the day is being entrusted to God.
A Prayer for the Journey
Lord, thank You for this day — for its gifts and its lessons. As I close my eyes, help me to release what was and trust You with what will be. May I lie down in peace, knowing that I am held by You. Amen.
