Water is the most overlooked nutrient. Discover why hydration matters and how to build simple, lasting habits.
A Word for the Season
Water is the most basic nutrient, and the most overlooked. Every cell, tissue, and organ in your body depends on it. Yet many people walk through their days mildly dehydrated — tired, foggy, and unaware that a glass of water might help.
Why Hydration Matters
Water regulates body temperature, lubricates joints, carries nutrients to cells, and flushes waste. Even mild dehydration can cause:
- Fatigue and low energy
- Headaches and difficulty concentrating
- Dry skin and digestion problems
- Reduced physical performance
How Much Do You Need?
A common guideline is about eight 8-ounce glasses a day, but needs vary with body size, activity, climate, and health. A practical approach: drink water regularly throughout the day, and let thirst and the color of your urine guide you — pale yellow is a good sign.
Simple Habits
- Begin the morning with a glass of water before coffee or food.
- Carry a reusable bottle so water is always within reach.
- Drink a glass with each meal.
- Add variety with slices of lemon, cucumber, or fresh mint.
- Eat water-rich foods like watermelon, cucumber, oranges, and soups.
A Gentle Reminder
If you feel hungry between meals, try water first — thirst is often mistaken for hunger. And if you are active or in hot weather, drink more to replace what you lose.
A Prayer for the Journey
Lord, thank You for the gift of living water — and for the simple, daily water that sustains our bodies. Help us care for ourselves in small, faithful ways. Amen.
