Mental health is part of whole-person wellness. Learn to recognize the signs, care for your mind, and find help and hope.
A Word for the Season
Mental health is not separate from spiritual or physical health — it is part of being a whole person. The mind, like the body, can be wounded, can become ill, and can be healed. There is no shame in struggling, and no shame in seeking help.
What Mental Health Includes
Mental health shapes how we think, feel, relate, and handle stress. Common concerns include:
- Depression — persistent low mood, loss of interest, fatigue, changes in sleep or appetite, feelings of worthlessness.
- Anxiety disorders — excessive, persistent worry, restlessness, racing heart, panic.
- Burnout — emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and a sense of reduced effectiveness, often from prolonged stress.
These are not character flaws or failures of faith. They are real conditions with real causes — biological, environmental, and relational — and they are treatable.
Caring for the Mind
Just as the body needs care, so does the mind:
- Stay connected. Healthy relationships are one of the strongest protectors of mental health.
- Move and rest. Physical activity and adequate sleep powerfully support mood.
- Limit alcohol and avoid substances that can deepen depression and anxiety.
- Practice gratitude. Noticing daily graces rewires the brain toward hope.
- Talk to someone. A trusted friend, pastor, or counselor can lighten the load.
- Seek professional help when needed. Therapy and, when appropriate, medication are effective, evidence-based treatments.
A Word of Hope
If you are in a dark place, please hear this: you are not alone, you are not a burden, and what you feel now is not the end of your story. If you have thoughts of harming yourself, reach out immediately — call or text 988 (in the U.S.) or your local emergency number.
A Prayer for the Journey
Lord, You see the hidden wounds of the heart. Be near to those who are weary in mind and spirit. Bring help, bring healing, bring hope. Let none of us walk through the dark alone. Amen.
