Sleep is not a luxury — it is a biological and spiritual necessity. Here is how rest heals the body, mind, and spirit.
A Word for the Season
We live in a world that praises productivity and quietly treats rest as wasted time. But sleep is one of the most powerful, healing processes in the human body — and it is a gift from God.
What Sleep Does
While you sleep, your body is anything but idle. During seven to nine hours of rest, your body:
- Repairs and rebuilds muscle, tissue, and cells.
- Consolidates memory and learning, moving information from short-term to long-term storage.
- Regulates hormones that control hunger, stress, growth, and mood.
- Clears the brain of waste products linked to Alzheimer’s and cognitive decline.
- Strengthens immunity, helping you fight off illness.
Chronic sleep deprivation — regularly getting less than seven hours — is linked to heart disease, diabetes, depression, weakened immunity, weight gain, and impaired judgment.
Building Better Rest
Good sleep is a practice you can cultivate:
- Keep a consistent schedule. Go to bed and wake at the same times, even on weekends.
- Protect the hour before bed. Dim the lights, step away from screens, and let your mind settle.
- Make your room a sanctuary. Cool, dark, and quiet. A comfortable mattress and bedding matter.
- Limit caffeine and alcohol in the hours before sleep — both fragment rest.
- Move during the day. Regular physical activity deepens sleep.
- Bring your worries to prayer. A mind at rest sleeps more easily.
A Gentle Word
If you struggle with insomnia, snoring, or unrefreshing sleep, you are not alone — and you do not have to simply endure it. Sleep apnea and other sleep disorders are common and treatable. Talk with your doctor.
A Prayer for the Journey
Lord, You made us to rest. Quiet our racing minds, release the burdens of the day, and let us lie down in peace. May our sleep restore us to serve another day. Amen.
